Old World vs New World Wines
07/11/2018

What is an Old World or New World Wine?

One of the basic differences is where the wine was made. Wines made in Europe are considered Old World wines whereas wines made in the Americas, Australia and South Africa are considered New World wines.  Wines from the Old World generally take on the name of the place they are made rather than the grape used to make the wine. The latitudes and terrain of Europe are mostly colder climates than New World growing regions – this results in grapes with lower sugars and higher acids. Old World wines typically are lighter with more acid. The higher acid levels allow them to age for a longer period of time – like 50 years. New World grapes generally have higher sugars which gives the wine more alcohol and bold fruit flavors and a more polished taste. Try a blind tasting and see what you find. Cheers!
