Why are wine corks different sizes?

The job of the wine cork is to prevent oxygen getting to the wine as it is aging. Corks come in different widths and lengths. Cork size is usually measured in millimeters, and the widths range from 20-24 mm with the most common size being 24mm. Cork lengths range from 38 mm to 54 mm. The balance in choosing a cork size is one that will protect your wine as it ages but not be too challenging to remove. A really long cork will break off more often as it is pulled out of the bottle. We have chosen to use 24mm wide and 49mm long as we think this is the perfect size to allow our red wines to ages for several years and still be easy to pop out when you are ready to drink. Cheers!
